This is a pretty strait forward plugin. It turns any page into a directory. I kinda used the DMOZ or open directory as a guide and put this together. If you are in need of a directory this one is easy to use and fits into your site without any advanced setup techniques. As always feel free to let me know what you think or report and bug and suggestions to the support forums!

August 9th, 2007 at 5:33 am Excellent. I've thought about something like this but hadn't gotten around to looking yet.
August 9th, 2007 at 8:20 am Not sure how to add a sub category. I dont see an option add a subcategory. Please help

August 9th, 2007 at 12:12 pm It doesn't work. Here what I did. Create a new page, type a title, then enter in the description and publish. When the page is view it show (with a space between
August 9th, 2007 at 3:12 pm Hi. This is very cool. When I activate the plug-in and add a page, I see on the "wp-directory" tag. There is no output. What could I be doing wrong?
August 9th, 2007 at 3:29 pm wow, i tried to put other plugs like this but always i have a problem, i hope this one results. thanks!!!
August 9th, 2007 at 3:46 pm Great looking plugin, only one major thing lacking. Better permalinks. The categories should have permalinks rather than just being flat $_GET variables, but overall a great plugin.
August 9th, 2007 at 4:09 pm @Varun - To add a sub category you first add a category then click on the newly added category name and there will be a form to add a subcategory hope that helps! @prakash - here is what you paste in @tony - same as above make sure there are two dashes on each side. for some reason when i typed in two dashes and published this page it only shows up as one! so it's< ! - - w p - d i r e c t o r y - - > withought the spaces! @Matthew Clapp - same as above @Jonathan - permalinks will be in the next version!! Plus more features.

August 10th, 2007 at 3:45 am I installed this plugin and did as you said with the page (with the two dashes, no spaces) and just the tag is visible and the directory isn't loading. used the without spaces liek you said.
August 10th, 2007 at 4:41 am If you can see the tag then you didn't write it in code view. Switch into code view when you are writing your page and put it in there. Hope that helps
August 10th, 2007 at 4:46 am that did it! Thanks!
August 10th, 2007 at 6:13 am Eric, same situation as chris'. I use code editor and not wysiwyg editor. Even in this case the directory doesnt show up. ( I have included extra dashes as metioned in your comments)
August 10th, 2007 at 10:42 am Eric, great plugin. For some reason, I can get the plugin to work, I can get the page to look like a directory, I added a category and when I went to add a site there was nothing in the category drop down menu in the admin panel. Any ideas? Thanks
August 10th, 2007 at 2:16 pm WP-Directory?!. Sound like good. I'll try this one. Thanks!
August 10th, 2007 at 4:06 pm I've installed the plugin (Wordpress 2.2.2) and set up the page as instructed. I created a couple of categories, added two sites, and I can see the header of the directory showing up on my new page. But... the sites don't show up, either on the page or in the Directory manager. I know they are there, because I checked the Directory stats page and it says there are two sites and two categories. Any idea what the problem might be? If this works, it's exactly what I need, so I hope there's an easy fix! Thanks!
August 10th, 2007 at 4:08 pm Oh, also, I can't select my categories from the drop down menu in the Add Site form. They just don't show up there.
August 10th, 2007 at 8:09 pm I modeled this plugin off of the google directory or The open directory project and how that works is you make a category and then subcategories and then you put the sites in the subcategories. So on the add site form no categories will show up until you have added subcategories and the you would add a site for what ever subcategory you wanted that site to be in. I have a couple requests for a version that allows you to put the sites straight into the categories and not have subcategories. This would be for a smalled directory that didn't need subcategories. I have started working on it and that version should be done this weekend! Hope that helps!
August 10th, 2007 at 8:16 pm are you going to combine the two versions so that sites can be put into categories and sub categories or are you making two separate versions?
August 10th, 2007 at 9:22 pm It will be one version. I will just make it an option!
August 10th, 2007 at 9:25 pm awesome!
August 10th, 2007 at 9:57 pm ok, here are a few ideas I have for this plugin. With looking at this picture http://www.2brotherz.com/directory.png you can see the details for the following ideas. 1) Make the Main category text larger as to stand out 2) only display directory name once instead of twice 3) allow a config option to display subcategories vertically under the main category in addition to the current way 4) space out the category sections so they don't run together as seen in the middle column now, on the sub category page (when clicking a main category link) you can see in the following picture that after the first row, all sub cats are in one column instead of 3 which I have defined. http://www.2brotherz.com/directory2.png that is a good start to my ideas, keep up the good work!
August 10th, 2007 at 10:48 pm ok, I was playing around with it and have it a little better more to my likings and possibly others. take a look at http://2brotherz.com/directory3.png If you like the looks of this let me know and I can give you the small code change I made to do this.
August 10th, 2007 at 10:49 pm Okay! I am working on this plugin right now so it shouldn't take very long!
August 10th, 2007 at 11:54 pm Yeah just paste it in a comment. I added the options you suggested. I am just testing to make sure the database gets updated properly for people who will be upgrading instead of installing it for the firs time. It looks to be working good so I just uploaded it and updated the change log. Try it out and let me know what you think!
August 11th, 2007 at 12:13 am a couple more things... 1) Is it possible to add sites to the main categories while still using sub categories? 2) How about the vertical list of sub categories under the main category listing on the main directory page. 3) I can't get the search function to work, it never returns any results 4) The version didn't get updated with the new release
August 11th, 2007 at 12:21 am I will implement that when I get home tonight and see what's going on with the search function. It's that time of the day to get off of work. Thanks for the tips!
August 11th, 2007 at 12:25 am sounds good. I really like this plugin and want to help as much as possible. If it easier for you to communicate via email lets do that.
August 11th, 2007 at 2:22 am Thanks for letting me know about subcategories. Now that's all set. I did upgrade to the new version. Great stuff. Still have a problem. Before I knew about sub categories I just created a couple of listings and just saved them without categorizing them, because I didn't know about the sub category. Like Chris, I'm trying to search for them to recategorize them but I can't find them. The stats panel says I have 3, but I was only able to give a sub-cat to one. Not sure where the other 2 are or how to get at them. Thanks again.
August 11th, 2007 at 10:58 am I downloaded and installed the new version and it still isn't working for me. I unchecked "subcategories" in options. I deleted my current categories and added a new category. In each case I got a message that my task was successfully accomplished. Then I headed into the Add Site form. I could see (even after reloading several times) both the deleted category names and the new category name in the drop-down menu. I selected the new name to add the site, typed in the information and was given the message that the site was added successfully. BUT, when I then looked at the Sites page and the main page, there were no sites listed. Checking the Stats page, I saw this: "There are 1 categories with 0 subcategories! Within those categories you have 4 active sites and 0 site waiting approval!" I'd really love this plugin to work right for me, because it's perfect for my site, but now I have four mystery sites in the directory, none of which I seem to be able to access through any of the plug-in pages. Any idea what's going on? Most of the other 2.2 approved plugins work fine for me.

August 11th, 2007 at 5:47 pm I fixed a couple of bugs from the update that allowed you to disable sub categories. Thanks for everyones feedback!
August 11th, 2007 at 6:00 pm is the download updated? the version number stays at 1.0 when installing
August 11th, 2007 at 6:43 pm Thanks for the fixes. Now I can see my sites, categorize them, and they show up on the page. I still see one bug, though. The categories I deleted earlier seem to be gone from the categories list, but they still show up in the drop-down menu in the Add Site form, so now I see the two deleted categories there, and the new one I added. And an aesthetic request... Is there any way to reduce the size of the line that says "Sites for [category name]?" It's huge and distracting. In fact, it would be nice to be able to get rid of it altogether because my headers are now redundant. They show the category name "Women's Health" with a nice description, and then comes this unnecessary but really large "Sites for..." line. You can see what I mean at http://yay-food.com/?page_id=12&wp_dir=sub&cat_id=3. When one doesn't have subcategories it would be a nice feature to be able to disable this line. Thanks for all your work!
August 12th, 2007 at 2:11 am AJAX would be the cherry on the cake! :o)
August 14th, 2007 at 9:29 am This is a superb plugin, thank you. Any news on the next version with the categories mod mentioned above? And Eric, where is your paypal donation box? You deserve some credit for this I reckon...
August 14th, 2007 at 10:30 am One other thing please: is there any reason why this plugin won't work on WordPress 2.0.10? Thanks again. Richard.
August 14th, 2007 at 4:04 pm Thanks for the idea on the donation box! I have never coded anything for wordpress before version 2.2.1 I am pretty new to wordpress and I am still learning the differences between the earlier versions. I do plan on checking all my plugins on earlier versions as soon as I finish my newest plugin. I haven't been able to find a mailing list plugin that is free and worth downloading so I am making one. I think this will be my best plugin yet! After that I will be putting up a page for people to give me ideas for new plugins.
August 14th, 2007 at 4:10 pm Do you plan on developing this plugin to allow for sites to be put in main categoriesin addition to the sites in sub categories?
August 15th, 2007 at 8:57 pm Wonderful and very useful plugin. I'm in agreement with Jonathan - permalinks but I guess you're working on that for the updated version :) I was wondering is there a quick fix for the double up sub-category name under the breadcrumbs. The breadcrumb says what's necessary so no need for more headings. I've searched high and low for the solution, without luck. Thanks
August 16th, 2007 at 12:05 am I am working on that. I will release a new version most likely Saturday with some new features! I have a list of things that I have made from comments and my own ideas. Thanks for the feed back and make sure you check back soon because I am almost done with my mailing list plugin.
August 19th, 2007 at 1:42 pm Hello Eric, thanks for good work. I also have problem with listing categories in 'Submit A Site!' screen even when 'Use Subcategories' is not ticked. The other problem is that categories are still present in Admin > 'Add A Site' screen even when they are deleted form Admin > Categories. P.S.: Same problem with subcategories too, when they on.
August 22nd, 2007 at 3:00 pm Hi, I have managed to install your plugin and it works perfectly. So please forget my last comment. I'm also the editor of an italian blog about WordPress and I will spread your work across my country. As well I I can suggest you to make sure your RSS link more visible (if there is any) as I couldn't find it!!! Ciao
August 23rd, 2007 at 1:33 am I like this plugin as well BUT, it will not let me choose a category when adding a link. Is this because I have not added subcategories? Also, 2 suggestions, 1) It would be great to populate the meta tags from the site into the title description, etc... 2) Would be nice to have the option when adding the link to follow or nofollow. Thanks
August 23rd, 2007 at 9:33 am The category dropdown menu when submitting a site shows always one item even if I'm browsing another category. How should I fix this? Tks
August 24th, 2007 at 2:29 pm In Safari browser, the category drop down menu in edit site is not active or is not working
August 24th, 2007 at 6:37 pm The only odd thing about this plugin is that you there are limited category options would be nice to have the ability to use both single categories as well as subcategories
August 24th, 2007 at 6:59 pm Sorting, you got to add this, sort categories, sort links also the sponsor feature, great but doesn't make sense that every site added becomes sponsor, would be better to make this so you manually select which site you want to add as a sponsor
August 25th, 2007 at 5:06 pm I installed your directory plugin, backlink and forum plugin. Have serious problems 1) directory does not show up on the created page. 2) forum shows but no place to click to add new posts ... there are no clickable options. Can you help? Wolf Apache
August 26th, 2007 at 6:24 am Hi Eric Just wondering whether you're getting any closer to the next release please? Many thanks for your great work. Richard

August 29th, 2007 at 1:17 am Hi Eric, I installed the plugin just fine. Added caterories with no problem. But when I add a site listing there is nothing in the category dropdown. Not sure what to do. Thanks.
September 2nd, 2007 at 5:31 pm I am almost finished with the new release! I think you are going to like it. I have added a bunch of new features. I am having a little trouble getting permalinks to work. As soon as that is done I will release it. I haven't ever worked with any of wordpress's permalink functions and filters so hopefully it doesn't take me too long!
September 3rd, 2007 at 3:54 pm Any rough guess of when this the new update will be released?
September 3rd, 2007 at 4:02 pm I am going to throw out a guess and say Thursday! Maybe sooner though..

September 17th, 2007 at 9:35 am This plugin is soooo good! Thank you. ...i am waiting for the netxt release.
September 20th, 2007 at 2:53 am I am having the same problem as WolfApache: when I install the plugin and create the directory page, it's like there is an open comment tag, the whole page is broken immediately after the page title. I have tried this with Wordpress 2.2 and 2.3 Beta with all other plugins off and in multiple themes including the default theme and BlogOhBlog. Also, I noticed in the code that there are a lot of ` characters where there should be ' single apostrophes. Replacing all of these still doesn't help. I have the latest version of PHP and safemode is off.
September 25th, 2007 at 12:16 pm Hey Eric :D The plugin is just cool.. In the starting i had some problem but then its all done! Read all the comments here and it helped in installation correctly :D Thanks again!
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:32 pm Great plugin. Is it able to do such as phpld? I'm kinda wanted to make paid directory. I guess most people is intended to do the same.
October 9th, 2007 at 11:50 am Hi, This sounds like just the plugin i need however i encountered a problem when i activated it. October 23rd, 2007 at 11:11 am If you can't get the directory to display, go into your phpmyadmin (in your cpanel mysql databses)...choose your database from the dropdown on the left...choose wp_posts...put a check next to post_content and click browse at the top. Find your entry for wp-directory...most likely there's some gobbledy gook in the content part and not like it should Click the "pencil" for the row pertaining to wp-directory and hard set into the post_content section. That should do it. This is a wordpress formatting issue and not the plugin. WP, for whatever reason scrambles your code sometimes and it can be a pain to get to post the normal, front end way...or any code for that matter. Sometimes ya gotta edit the db to make things work James
October 26th, 2007 at 3:37 am Aaaaarghhh! Gosh, just when I found the plugin I was searching for, it doesn't work on the wordpress version I'm using. Man! Eric, I want that plugin to work on my WP version! Boo hoo hoo! BTW, I'm using version 2.1.2 and 2.0.4, other than that, it looks like a promising plugin.
