Always take into account what people are going to need or want from your site. Research other relative sites and find out what is missing. Don’t just be another source for something that is already crowded anyways. To have a successful site you need to offer things that your competition do n’t, or in a way that is more useful or easier for your visitors.
There is definitely room for more websites on the internet. There are areas that have yet to be tapped into and new ideas that haven’t been thought of yet. Don’t limit yourself to what’s out there or get your ideas from other sites. Often ideas for a good site will come to me at the most random time. Most likely I am already working on something so it would have to wait it’s turn, but I don’t let that idea go to waste. I always make sure to write the idea down and have a brainstorming session with my partner while the idea is fresh. then I file it away with all the other ideas until I have time to take on something new.
I have enough site ideas to keep a design and programming company busy for a long time. Make sure not to rush your site and cut corners. Always make sure everything works and that it is ready and you have carefully went through everything!
Ask someone not related to the project to browse the site and give you some criticism. Take that criticism and learn from it, don’t let it get to you if someone doesn’t like what you have made. Not everyone will.
