I have been using google adsense as my main ad server for a while now. I have noticed that it really does matter where you place your ads, what colors you use, and if you use text or image ads. Make sure you don’t just throw some ads on your site. You want to play around with them and put each ad on it’s own channel so you can keep track of how well each ad is doing. This is something you want to do over the period of a couple of months so you can give each different ad setup some time to collect some stats. If I make a change I want to leave it up for at least two weeks and then go off of that average.
Make sure you keep track of what works the best. Ad optimization can make a huge difference in you monetization efforts, so don’t it lightly!
