I have been looking into building my own little web cluster for development ant testing reasons. Also I was going to run a few web apps on there that I built and it is crazy how much it costs for just a t1 line where I live. The closest backbone to the internet is about 250 miles away so I can see how that might influence the price but it’s not like I want an OC line or anything.
Anyways, If you want to run your own hardware to the internet your looking a pretty big investment in hardware and mainly your uplink. A lot of companies will try to get you into a three of four year contract on the bigger connections so be careful out there. Looks like I am just going to add another server where I host all my sites. There are a lot of good companies out there with some good dedicated servers. With a 100Mb pipe and usually a pretty good amount of bandwidth it’s hard to pass up.
