Ten Years? This March the MP3 player celebrated it’s ten year birthday. Well… technically it was released in October of 2001… for all you fact checking my posts, but never-the-less the MP3 player has done a lot of growing up since then. The first MP3 player ever released was the Saehan MPMan F10. The device only had  32 MB of Flash storage, only about enough memory for 8 songs at a crummy sample rate and didn’t draw much attention from the consumer market. You’ve come a LONG way baby!

Actually the 2nd released MP3 player, the Diamond Rio PMP300 was the beauty that caught the attention of both consumers alike and the legal department from RIAA (Industry Association of America) The RIAA sued the company for giving people the option to let people listen to music port-ably without using radio feeds or paying royalty fees for playback of these songs. Sound familiar? While we are still fighting this battle today and have seen it repeated many times with the Napster case, as well as the crack down from Apple regarding ITunes and down-loadable content, it is amazing that the MP3 player is now a staple of the cultural consumer market and is still evolving even as we speak. Happy Birthday Mp3 player, have a drink on us!
