How many sites are there that write articles about the same topic that you do? I write about search engine optimization and wordpress among other things, but those are pretty much that main topics. I have a new site that is starting to rank pretty good for some phrases. If there are a lot of sites that are talking about the same thing then you might want to think about picking a different subject or putting a twist on it. Also, how much traffic is searching for your subject. If you are writing in a crowded space with not a lot of people searching for it then you probably aren’t going to be too happy with your traffic and monetization efforts.

A good thing to do before you start your blog is to search for what it is you will be writing about. That way you can see what sites you will be competing with. If there a re a lot of big sites at the top of the rankings followed by a bunch more smaller sites then you might want to reconsider your topic. I always look at google’s traffic trends to compare different terms to get and idea of what people are looking for.

You may find that no one is searching for what you want to write about. This can save you a lot of time finding a good subject to write about that doesn’t have too much competition and has a decent amount of traffic. I just happen to be in a really crowded space that doesn’t have a lot of traffic, but this isn’t my only site. Take your time when it comes to choosing a subject. Make sure it is something that you can see yourself writing about for a long time. Only then will you see then numbers that you are hoping for!
