Some webmaster spend a lot of time writing in forums because most sites will let you put a link in your footer. So if you have a link or two in your footer and you write a 1000 post that is 1 or 2 thousand backlinks.
Now how valuable are those links. Well obviously check the rank of the page you are writing on and then look at how many links there are on that page and there’s your answer. Not very much rank is transferred to you site but when you multiply that not very much by 1 or 2 thousand you have something.
So in my opinion it is well worth your time to write in forums. Just make sure they are on the topic your site is about and you will even learn a lot in the process.
I think it is a good idea to post a lot on forums but only if it is decent content.
If you were to look for every forum over PR5 and just post nothing but pointless stuff then I think most of the members would become annoyed.
I find if you actually try to help people with constructive posts then people will take you a lot more seriously than if you were to just post “I agree” or “Cool” or “lol” on random posts.

Posting in forums is useful SEO wise, but mind the potential revenue. I saw people selling a forum signature for 10-20$ a month and much more.

Wow, I never even thought of that. I have done my share of talking in forums. How many posts did that user have that was selling his signature links. I would have to believe it was at least 2 or 3 thousand right?
I have lots of forum accounts – but I only post in the ones that I find useful. I skip the rest. My forum signatures always have links in them to my sites.
Most forum threads will never have any page rank – so they aren’t really worth it for page rank reasons. However, if you make a good contribution to the fourm – then other readers are more likely to click the links in your signature and visit your site.
